Sign up for Girls Rock Camp!

Come this June, girls in the Southern Black Hills will show just how hard they can ROCK with the second annual Girls Rock Camp.

Led by a group of mentors and coaches, Girls Rock Camp Custer is a non-profit project that will give young girls the opportunity to create and perform music at the inaugural rock camp, taking place June 11-15 at Custer Jr./Sr. High School in Custer. At the camp, participants (who do not require any previous musical experience) will learn the basics of an instrument, form bands and write and perform a song. They will be encouraged to write and play music with the aim of inspiring girls to ROCK in whatever way they want. Girls Rock Camp Custer is designed to shape confidence, creativity, self-esteem and self-expression. Girls Rock Camp Custer is all about trying new things, working together and making lots of NOISE!

The camp will take place from Monday, June 11, to Friday, June 15, while the concert — showcasing the all-girl bands — will be held Saturday, June 16, at 7 p.m. The camp is open to girls in fourth through eighth grades living in the Southern Black Hills, including the communities of Custer, Edgemont, Hermosa, Hill City, Hot Springs and Keystone.

Camp days will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day at the high school. The fee for the week-long camp is $50, with scholarships available. Students are required to attend each day of camp in order to perform in the showcase on Saturday. The deadline for applications is June 1.

Girls Rock Camp Custer is a partnership between the Custer Area Arts Council and Zonta of the Southern Black Hills, both nonprofit 501(c) organizations.
